1972 Topps #740: Rico Carty, Atlanta Braves, OF

Rico Carty would play his final season with the Atlanta Braves in 1972, having played for the team since 1963 while they were still in Milwaukee.  Although Carty spent the entire '71 season on the disabled list, he was coming off a mostly impressive performance over the past few years.  Most significantly, Carty led not only his league, but the entire majors in Batting Avg. in 1970.  He was also a contributor to the Braves' effort in the 1st-ever League Championship Series in 1969--batting .300 with 3 walks, 3 hits, 2 doubles, and 4 runs in 13 total plate appearances over 3 games against the soon to be World Series champion Mets.  Carty's major league career continued through the '79 season.

Comment:  I had this card at EXMT 6.0 until I noticed what I call a hairline "thumb crease" on the back.  It looks like a U-shaped crease with the vertex over the N.L. in the 1965 stat.  I was able to pick up some of it on the photograph.  It is not visible from the front of the card.
