1950 Bowman #144: Al Evans, Washington Senators, C

Al Evans was born on 9/28/1916 in Kenly, NC.  Evans began playing for the Washington Senators (Nationals) in 1939.  He missed the '43 and majority of the '44 seasons to serve in the Navy during WWII.  Evans went back to the Senators (Nationals) at the end of 1944, where he would remain through 1950.  He led the league in DP's turned as a C in '47 and in Fielding % as a C in '49.  In 1951, Evans played his final major league season with the Red Sox.  Afterward, he became a minor league manager for various teams between '55-'65.  Al Evans passed away on 4/6/1979 in Wilson, NC at the age of 62.

Comment:  Here's another nicer lower-grade card.  Apparently, Evans was a year older than his '50 card had him listed.
