This was Phil's last regular issue Topps card. I used to think that Phil Niekro looked a lot like Rodney Dangerfield in his '87 Topps photo. Beginning his MLB career in 1964, Niekro was the 2nd longest tenured player in the game during the '87 season (next to Pete Rose). He was the last of the 1930's generation to play in the majors at 48 years old. In 1988, Topps did produce a Record Breaker card for him and his brother Joe. In 1997, he was elected into the HOF.
Among my 1966 Topps acquisitions today, I received Phil Niekro's 3rd year card along with his teammate Ed Matthews. The back of the card shows that Phil Niekro took a break from the minors to serve in the military during the 1963 season before coming back to play for the Milwaukee Braves team in '64.
This card shows Phil Niekro during the Brave's first year in Atlanta.
